아이폰X 페이스ID, 13세 미만 얼굴은 인식 못할 수도

애플은 아이폰X에서 가장 주목받고 있는 페이스ID에 적용된 첨단 기술에 대하여 설명하는 페이지를 오픈했습니다. 페이스ID는 아이폰5s 이후 줄곧 탑재된 터치ID를 대체하는 얼굴 인식 시스템입니다.

그런데 아이폰X가 출시도 되기 전부터 페이스ID에 대한 우려의 목소리가 나오고 있습니다. 애플 키노트에서 페이스ID 시연 중, 실패하는 장면이 포착되었기도 했고. 경쟁사인 삼성 갤럭시 S8이 사진도 얼굴로 인식하는 오류를 보여줬기 때문입니다.

애플은 이와 같은 우려들을 불식시키기 위해, 공개된 해당 페이지에서 페이스ID는 애플이 개발한 최첨단 기술이 총집합된 기술이라고 강조합니다.

페이스ID는 'True Depth' 카메라와 'Machine Learning' 기술을 통해 작동합니다. 그렇기 때문에 모자, 안경, 선글라스 등 악세사리와 상관없이 작동합니다. 그리고 얼굴의 수학적 모델을 포함한 페이스ID의 모든 데이터는 'Secure Enclave'내에서 안전하게 보호됩니다. 결과적으로 아이폰X의 페이스ID가 오작동 할 확률은 100만 분의 1에 불과하고 이는 터치ID가 오작동 할 확률인 5만 분의 1을 완전히 뛰어넘습니다.

하지만 이러한 온갖 노력에도 불구하고, 페이스ID는 13세 미만 어린이 중 얼굴이 닮은 쌍둥이, 형제 자매의 경우 정확하게 인식을 못할 수도 있다고 합니다. 해당 사용자들은 얼굴이 완전히 뚜렷하게 발달된 상태가 아니기 때문에, 애플은 페이스ID 대신 암호를 사용하기를 권장하고 있습니다.

Apple has opened a page that explains the cutting edge technology applied to Face ID, the most notable feature in iPhone X. Face ID is a Face Recognition system that replaces the Touch IDs that have been around since the iPhone 5s.

However, even before the launch of iPhone X, there is a concern about Face ID. During the demonstration of Face ID in Apple Keynote, the scene of failure was caught. Samsung Galaxy S8, a competitor, has shown errors in recognizing images as faces.

In order to address these concerns, Apple emphasizes that Face ID is a technology packed with state-of-the-art technology developed by Apple.

Face ID works through 'True Depth' camera and 'Machine Learning' technology. Therefore, hat, glasses, sunglasses and accessories will work regardless. And all the data of the face ID including the mathematical model of the face is safely protected in 'Secure Enclave'. As a result, the chance that the face ID of the iPhone X will malfunction is only a millionth, which exceeds the one-fifth of the probability that the touch ID will malfunction.

However, despite all these efforts, Face IDs may not be recognized accurately for twins and siblings whose faces resemble those of children under the age of 13. Apple recommend using a password instead of a Face ID, as these users are not fully developed.
