애플이 맥북에 자체 개발 프로세서를 탑재할 가능성도 있다

애플이 iOS 디바이스뿐만 아니라, 맥북에도 자체 개발 프로세서를 탑재할 가능성이 있다는 루머가 나왔습니다. 현재 애플은 맥북에 인텔 프로세서를 사용하고 있습니다.

애플은 현재 이미 iOS 디바이스에 자체 개발한 A 시리즈 프로세서를 사용하고 있습니다. 자체 개발 프로세서는 ARM 기반의 프로세서인데요. 애플이 굳이 이미 안정적으로 사용하고 있는 인텔 프로세서를 내치고, 자체 개발 ARM 프로세서를 사용하려는 이유가 있습니다.

일단, 자체 개발 ARM 프로세서는 탑재된 기기의 크기 대비 엄청난 성능을 보여줍니다. 단편적인 예시로는 최신 아이폰과 아이패드 프로가 있습니다. 이번에 새롭게 공개된 아이폰8과 아이폰X에 탑재된 자체 개발 프로세서 A11 바이오닉은, 2017 맥북프로 13인치보다도 높은 벤치마크 점수를 보여줍니다. 물론, 벤치마크 점수에 불과하기는 합니다. 그러나 애플이 지금까지 보여줬던 최적화 실력을 macOS에서 다시 한번 보여준다면, macOS와 자체 개발 ARM 프로세서의 시너지 효과는 엄청날 것입니다. 또한, ARM 프로세서는 성능뿐만이 아니라, 배터리 수명 또한 인텔 프로세서보다 우위를 점합니다.

그리고 애플은 최근 하락세를 보이고 있는 인텔의 의존성을 낮추고 싶어 합니다. 인텔은 신제품 출시를 매번 연기해서 애플의 골머리를 앓게 할 뿐만 아니라, 카비레이크 프로세서 같은 경우에는 LPDDR4를 지원하지 않는 문제 등이 있습니다.

이렇듯 애플이 자체 개발 프로세서를 맥북에 적용하는 데에는 충분한 이유가 있습니다. 그러나 넘어야 하는 산이 너무 많습니다. macOS부터 사용되는 앱까지 ARM 프로세서에 맞게 튜닝되어야 합니다. 튜닝이 완료되었다고 쳐도, 맥북을 제외한 맥 데스크탑 라인업과의 호환성에 문제가 생깁니다. 아직 데스크탑 라인업을 감당할 만큼 자체 개발 ARM 프로세서가 강력하지 않은 만큼, 맥 데스크탑 라인업에는 여전히 인텔의 프로세서를 사용해야 하기 때문이죠.

맥북에 자체 개발 프로세서를 탑재하는 것은 이렇게나 좋은 일이면서도 어려운 일입니다. 그러나 애플은 이 작업을 언젠가는 해야 할 것이고, 하게 될 것임에는 틀림없습니다.

There has been rumor that Apple may have its own development processor on the MacBook as well as on iOS devices. Apple currently uses Intel processors in its MacBooks.

Apple is already using its own A Series processors, which are already built into iOS devices. The in-house developed processor is an ARM-based processor. There is a reason why Apple decided to release an Intel processor that it already reliably uses and that it uses a self-developed ARM processor.

First, the in-house developed ARM processor shows tremendous performance relative to the size of the device on board. A fragmentary example is the latest iPhone and iPad Pro. The newly released iPhone 8 and the in-house developed processor A11 Bionic on the iPhone X show benchmark scores higher than the 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch. Of course, it is just a benchmark score. However, once MacOS has shown the optimizations Apple has shown so far, the synergy between macOS and its in-house ARM processor will be enormous. In addition to performance, ARM processors also outperform Intel processors with battery life.

And Apple wants to lower its dependency on Intel, which is showing a recent decline. Not only does Intel postpone new product launches every time, but it also does not support LPDDR4 in the case of karby lake processors.

There is good reason for Apple to apply its own development processor to the MacBook. But there are too many things to cross. Apps from macOS must be tuned for ARM processors. Even if tuning is completed, there is a problem with compatibility with the Mac desktop lineup except for the MacBook. That's because the in-house developed ARM processor is not powerful enough to handle the desktop line up yet, so Apple still have to use Intel's processor for the Mac desktop lineup.
